Adventure of a Lifetime

When we think of adventure, it’s usually when we’re planning a vacation, isn’t it? It might be taking a bicycle trip to visit charming villages and enjoy delicious local cuisine in Provence. Maybe an African safari. How about a cruise that stops at all the ports you want to visit – as long as we’re dreaming!

For a week or two each year, many of us shed our typical day-to-day routines and try things we wouldn’t ordinarily do, like ziplining, parasailing, snorkeling, moped riding, and petting dolphins. We usually wear clothes that are more “colorful” too. Or for something more mellow and less pricey, getting out and walking more, relaxing and enjoying a change of scenery, and maybe having a spa day.

Ok, where was I? I sailed off myself there for a moment. All of that sounds good to me!

On vacation, we switch gears, don’t we? We can be tired from doing things we don’t ordinarily do, but feel recharged at the same time. We stop to notice and marvel at things we haven’t seen or noticed before. We try different kinds of food that the locals eat and engage our senses in a new experience. We take time to savor life and its grand variety.

What if we lived more like this the rest of the year?

Staying in our comfort zone, eating comfort food, wearing comfortable pajama pants and a big sweatshirt is great! We all need to relax and rest. But the pandemic is over and there’s a world of things for us to explore! I’m not suggesting we forget about our responsibilities, put a trampoline in the backyard, and jump on it all day. But what if we incorporated more “mini experiences” into our life? What if we set aside at least one day or weekend a month to physically get out of the house or place we live for our mental health and do something … else!

When was the last time you…

Went to the zoo?

Went to a museum?

Had a picnic and played a game like croquet or bocce ball?

Went on a bike ride?

Took a class for fun?

What ideas can you add to the list?

Now, what if we also changed our attitude about everyday things and “ordinary” days? Can you add some adventure and a little “getaway” to those as well?

Rearrange the furniture.

Make a healthy new recipe from scratch instead of getting takeout food.

Start a new hobby or revive an old one.

Learn something you didn’t know before.

Open your Bible and read about the bigger picture each day.

Life is hard at times, work can be exhausting, and God sees us. He gives us a countless variety of free gifts to enjoy out of His goodness and love for us. Fun is free! All of His creation is free! Our body and soul are free! Our family and friends are free! Most of all, He offers us eternal life in Heaven if we accept His free gift of salvation and forgiveness of our sins. We can’t buy it.

1 Timothy 6:17 (NLT) says: “Teach those who are rich in this world, not to be proud, and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.”

The ultimate adventure of a lifetime is making discoveries about God.

Above the surface of these physical things is a next-level, personal relationship we can have with the living God who loves us. As believers, He’ll teach us life-changing discovery after discovery if we read the book He’s given us, the Holy Bible. By knowing and believing His promises, blessings come to life from its pages. We’ll also see that the challenges of our life have lessons to learn about what’s most important. We may be living on Earth, but our citizenship is in Heaven and the BEST is yet to come. The adventure continues…!

RESET HIGHER: Is your life a bit “flat”? Are you waiting for things to change? Stop waiting and get going! It’s your lifetime and your adventure, so don’t miss it. Instead, make the most of it. If you change your life, you may inspire others to change too!
