How to Become a Christian

If you’ve been reading these Thinkspace messages and Bible verses and feel in your heart that God is speaking to you about becoming a Christian, you can pray to Him now. Keep reading…

The Bible says in Romans 3:23 (NLT), “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” This has serious consequences: “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Even while we were living in sin, God loved us and made a way for us to be forgiven, as we read in Romans 5:8, “God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

We can respond to this incredible love of God by accepting His free gift of salvation by doing and believing this: “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved,” Romans 10:9. This salvation isn’t just for some, it’s for anyone, no matter what we have done, where we are from, or any other factor. Romans 10:13 says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

If you believe in Jesus and pray to receive His free gift of salvation, your sins will be forgiven, you’ll receive eternal life and the Holy Spirit will live within you to teach you and guide you. Then as a Christian, all of God’s promises found in the Bible will be yours to claim! Come as you are right now and He will do the rest as you follow Him.

All of this is possible because God sent His only Son, Jesus, to earth to die on the cross to pay the high cost of our sins with His blood. He did this out of His great love for us! Jesus paid a debt He didn’t owe because we owed a debt we could never pay. This was necessary to bridge the separation between God, who is holy, and people, who are sinners. Then when Jesus rose from the dead, He conquered death and sin so that through Him we can have forgiveness and eternal life.

Jesus is the only way to salvation, as the Bible teaches in Acts 4:12, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

To receive this free gift of salvation today and know you will go to Heaven when you die, sincerely pray this prayer out loud and God will hear you. Right here. Right now.

This is the prayer that Billy Graham prayed with thousands of people at his crusades:

Dear Lord Jesus,

I know I am a sinner and I ask for Your forgiveness.

I believe you died for my sins and rose from the dead.

I turn from my sins and invite you to come into my heart and life.

I want to trust and follow you as my Lord and Savior.

In Your name,

Amen.

If you prayed and meant that prayer, God heard you. We know this is true because 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all righteousness.”

Congratulations and welcome to the family of God! Whether you felt emotional, a burden lifted, or not, rest assured God has answered your prayer. This verse now speaks about your new life:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17
