Something occurred to me the other day that I hadn’t really thought about. Lots of jobs on earth will be obsolete in Heaven.
All of us want to know what Heaven will be like. We strain to see what is in the future and understand something that hasn’t been fully revealed to us. Our limited human imaginations make up things like we’ll play harps for eternity surrounded by chubby cherubs or go from cloud to cloud playing golf (or whatever your favorite pastime is). What God does reveal in the Holy Bible is a mind-blowing glimpse of eternal paradise for believers in Jesus Christ.
Let’s take a different approach to make Heaven more relatable to us earthlings – by thinking about what won’t be there. Many things that are essential to us now will be obsolete for good. The absence of these things we are familiar with can help us understand what God’s eternal kingdom will actually be like.
What will we base this on? Let’s start with these words inspired by the Holy Spirit and given to us by the Apostle John in the book of Revelation 21:1-5 (NIV)
“Then I saw ‘a new heaven, and a new earth,’ for the first heaven, and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning, or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who is seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then He said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ “
Let’s slow down and picture this. God will wipe away the tears we’ve cried. There will be no more death or mourning. No more crying. No more pain. He will make everything new! God Himself is the One on the throne who says these words are trustworthy and true. He wrote them down through the Apostle John so that what we just read, on this day, is a message to you and to me to understand and believe in with complete confidence.
That’s why we can know these things on earth won’t be needed ever again in Heaven. No more…
Military
Police
Firemen
First Responders
Guards
With sin and evil removed there will be peace and safety for everyone. No more…
Doctors
Dentists
Surgeons
Nurses
Medicine or vaccinations or chemotherapy
Pharmaceutical companies
Wheelchairs, artificial limbs or testing machines
There will be no more pain or suffering or cancer or disease of any kind. No more…
Insurance companies
Attorneys
Judges
God will be the only and righteous Judge. In Heaven there will be nothing to be protected from. No more…
Funeral homes
Crematoriums
Morticians
Cemeteries
There will be no more death, only eternal life!
We’ve lived our entire lives with all of these things being necessary to protect us from the effects of a fallen world where there is sin and death and a very real enemy, satan, who has already been defeated (see Revelation 20:10). Understanding that all of these things will be removed creates a new thought and level of understanding for us about what Heaven will be like.
Finally(!) no more…
Prejudice or Racism
We are God’s children, ALL made in His image. There will be no reason for cruelty in God’s family because we will finally see that we are equal. It will be – extinct.
As believers in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, we will experience this place where everything is new. We’ll be free from disease. We’ll no longer have any reason to fear. We’ll only have peace. We’ll only have safety. We’ll finally be home with our loving Heavenly Father…forever.
