RESET HIGHER: On December 24, 1968, three American astronauts orbited the moon for the first time. It had been a turbulent and unsettling year: Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy had been assasinated. The war in Vietnam had grown and there were race riots across the U.S. However, this voyage united people everywhere in support of the Apollo 8 mission as fellow human beings – experiencing the making of history together by observing Earth from space.

The broadcast was the first live television transmission from lunar orbit. It was an unforgettable message to the largest television audience up to that point in history, estimated to be up to a billion people around the world.

The message content was left up to the astronauts. It was familiar to many, yet more powerful read from space and a view unseen before except by God. Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders – the crew of Apollo 8 – read the opening verses of Genesis 1:1-10 to a world captivated by the moment.

As believers, one day our own perspective will change and become infinitely higher in Heaven. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to live on the unique blue planet He created. He entered our world to save us from our sins and pay our debt so we could be forgiven and restored to a personal relationship with God the Father who is holy. We celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas for giving us this priceless gift of love and eternal life – but we must pray to Him and accept it.
